Rights watchdogs have alleged Beijing of carrying out mass surveillance on the Uyghur population in its northwestern Xinjiang province. More than a million members of the minority are estimated to have been detained in a extensive system of facilities.
In 2019, the tech firm registered a legal protection for a biometric tool that it stated had the capacity to pick members of the group out of a public space.
Even though the firm rejected that the tool was used to single out Uyghurs, the America enacted penalties on Sense Time in recently. American officials stated it was barring US funding in the enterprise because it was creating systems that could “determine a person's background, with a specific aim on recognizing the minority group.

Beijing criticized the statement and said lawmakers had “cooked up” the resolution to discredit China.
Fuller’s Role and Comments
The MP, the politician, has held a number of roles at Investcorp Securities, some pre-dating his first election to Westminster in 2010. Nevertheless, he was only required to notify Acoba when he intended to return to the business after departing his ministerial post.
This position provides a significant sum a year on top of his official income, based on the transparency list of politicians' outside income.
Fuller said in a response: “I went back as an consultant to the firm in spring last year following clearance from the Acoba. It was included in my transparency record in the usual way.
“The investment arm I advise is a segment of a much wider company, the parent firm. The portfolios I consult on are only focused on funding in European technology businesses.
“At no stage have I played any role at, or had any dealings with, either the Chinese fund or their portfolio company the startup.”
The Watchdog Wind-Down

The watchdog's reply to the MP did not mention the Investcorp group’s documented associations to Sense Time or indicate it had examined this when guiding on the role.
The correspondence recognized a concern that the MP's contacts and power could be utilized to help Investcorp Securities improperly. It noted that in his ministerial position he may have had entry to general sensitive information which could benefit a number of organisations”.

It noted that he had not met with the firm while in his role. It advised Fuller he could assume the role on the proviso that he did not utilize confidential data he had accessed or petition the administration on the firm's account for a specific period.
