UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman harboring several personalities within her must escape from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct personas, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes depict the main character exploring a abandoned church.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."
The core mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will change against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one standing might be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
