Two Cuba-Destined Humanitarian Sailboats Listed Missing after Setting Sail from the Coast of Mexico.
A comprehensive rescue and recovery mission is currently in progress in the Caribbean Sea for two lost boats transporting humanitarian supplies traveling from Mexico to Cuba.
Maritime Search and Rescue Missions Launched
The Mexican government has deployed naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the two vessels, which were transporting a minimum of 9 crew members, according to a official statement.
The vessels had been scheduled to arrive in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, the navy said.
Context of Aid to the Nation
Cuba has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the island grapples with widespread power outages across the country.
"Both captains and crews are experienced sailors, and both vessels are equipped with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," a spokesperson associated with the mission said.
The nine individuals on board are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.
"We are working closely with the officials and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.
Recent Humanitarian Delivery
Previously that week, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had delivered 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the nation.
That vessel, nicknamed "a new Granma" following the name of the boat in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to launch the revolution in the 1950s, delivered photovoltaic panels, medicines, formula milk, bicycles and foodstuffs.
Larger International Backdrop
Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of attempts to deliver critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the island nation came into effect.
Global bodies have since raised alarms about "dire" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50k surgeries postponed in Cuba because of energy rationing.
Political tensions have increased over the past months, with statements from several leaders highlighting the complicated state of relations.
Reacting to recent proposals, a prominent official from Cuba stated firmly that "the political system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."
Accounts suggest that initial phases of negotiations had begun, although their current progress remains unclear.
The Mexican navy said it was pledged to using all of the resources at its reach to locate the boats and ensure the safety of the crews.
As of now, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
