Thomas Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Aggression Provided England's Ace Sets Aside His Ego at the Door.
A single omission was enough. A second one and it would have started to look spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is much too clever not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require help from the talented midfielder, even if it is also up to the player to blend into the tactical structures and team pecking order necessary with England now that he is back in the manager's welcoming fold.
Tuchel wants the player's competitive fire, his intensity, but it is about harnessing it constructively. Skill counts but England understand from past setbacks that there is consequences when celebrity prevails. Still, a statement has been delivered.
Bellingham was given food for thought after being left out of the recent team selection. He observed England book their place at the tournament without him. He watched the young talent perform brilliantly as a counterpressing No 10. He heard Tuchel discuss appreciating the team's dynamism and values. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in top form, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid against their rivals and Juventus. He had to be picked; another omission would have left his World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.
The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham directed towards pressuring the opposition rather than teammates. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is no value to picking a fight with one of the best players in the world. The best outcome is that his period not playing has demonstrated that playing for one's country is a precious, precarious thing. The coach, on his side, can now provide cover around the youngster after proving that he is not afraid to make big calls.
“No issue exists regarding him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel commented. “Jude possesses that aggression. It takes a certain edge to succeed at the top that he has. Everyone need to support him and build a atmosphere where he can channel his drive towards opponents and towards the goals we are working towards as a team.”
The star dominated most of the attention at the manager's selection reveal for this month’s dead-rubber qualifiers versus Serbia and Albania. Who else? Indeed, how about another talent? Here is a further gifted No 10 requiring love and guidance. Foden has been absent for the national team since March and has struggled to reach his best this year but Tuchel had to consider the player after his display in Manchester City’s win versus the German side this week.
The issue, though, is how to use the multiple playmakers at available. Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be compelling reasons to pick Cole Palmer once he recovers from a ongoing injury. Is selecting five No 10s to the tournament be excessive? The previous manager failed to discover the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, restricting Harry Kane’s game as a result.
It is hard to see the current manager making the same mistake if it disrupts the offensive structure. There is room for a single playmaker, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clarity helps. He is selected as a No 10. The new call-up, called up for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the recalled Adam Wharton will battle another player as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no wide role for Foden, who has to be central. Tuchel prefers him near Kane. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘We want you on the pitch but no spot exists on your best position, can you play the left side? Or the other flank?’” he said. “He is to feature in the central attacking zone, through the center. I've long had this vision about him for years. I think it suits him the most.”
He agreed there are times when the player has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “One senses as if, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And a player like him who has such natural delight to play football, then clearly an issue exists, be it the position, the environment, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is also accustomed to playing for Man City in a particular setup, to have a defined role. I think he profits greatly from clarity. What is my position? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defensive duties?”
Tuchel mentioned one star bursting through for tap-ins and Foden scoring strikes from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have been omitted. A new face is rewarded for his fine form for City at left-back. Interest abounds.
The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for the captain in the selection. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are alternatives should he be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is a moment for a little experimentation.
At the same time, it is also a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with his teammate flowing. It is remarkable that you have to go back to the latter assisting Kane to score in a friendly win versus the Scots in September 2023 to discover the one and only time in many appearances for England when the duo combined for a score. The coach will know that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball a single time during the team's ties with one opponent and another at the European Championship. The connection is lacking.
“This is where at some point it falls to the responsibility of the players,” he stated. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. Remains a sense of Bellingham under scrutiny. He may not be guaranteed to start against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants Bellingham onside but he will be monitoring him closely. Leave the ego at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong England team into an more effective one.
