The State of Texas Attorney General Sues Acetaminophen Manufacturers Over Autism Assertions

Judicial Action
The Texas Attorney General, a Trump ally who is running for US Senate, accused pharmaceutical manufacturers of concealing potential dangers of acetaminophen

The top legal official in Texas Paxton is taking legal action against the manufacturers of acetaminophen, claiming the companies concealed safety concerns that the drug created to children's brain development.

This legal action comes four weeks after Donald Trump publicized an unverified association between using acetaminophen - alternatively called acetaminophen - during pregnancy and autism in young ones.

Paxton is taking legal action against the pharmaceutical giant, which once produced the drug, the only pain reliever recommended for pregnant women, and the current manufacturer, which currently produces it.

In a statement, he claimed they "misled consumers by gaining financially from discomfort and marketing drugs without regard for the dangers."

Kenvue asserts there is insufficient reliable data connecting Tylenol to autism spectrum disorder.

"These corporations lied for decades, knowingly endangering millions to increase profits," the attorney general, a Republican, declared.

Kenvue said in a statement that it was "very worried by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the security of paracetamol and the possible consequences that could have on the welfare of American women and children."

On its website, the company also mentioned it had "regularly reviewed the relevant science and there is lacking reliable evidence that demonstrates a established connection between using acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder."

Groups acting on behalf of physicians and health professionals agree.

The leading OB-GYN organization has stated paracetamol - the primary component in acetaminophen - is one of the few options for women during pregnancy to treat pain and elevated temperature, which can pose major wellness concerns if left untreated.

"In more than two decades of studies on the consumption of acetaminophen in pregnancy, no reliable research has successfully concluded that the consumption of acetaminophen in any stage of pregnancy causes neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring," the group said.

This legal action references recent announcements from the Trump administration in arguing the drug is potentially dangerous.

In recent weeks, the former president caused concern from medical authorities when he instructed pregnant women to "resist strongly" not to take acetaminophen when sick.

Federal regulators then published an announcement that doctors should think about restricting the use of Tylenol, while also mentioning that "a proven link" between the medication and autism spectrum disorder in minors has not been proven.

The Health Department head Kennedy, who supervises the FDA, had promised in April to undertake "extensive scientific investigation" that would identify the origin of autism spectrum disorder in a limited time.

But specialists advised that identifying a unique factor of autism - thought by researchers to be the consequence of a complex mix of genetic and surrounding conditions - would be difficult.

Autism spectrum disorder is a category of permanent neurological difference and impairment that influences how people perceive and engage with the environment, and is diagnosed using physician assessments.

In his legal document, Paxton - a Trump ally who is seeking federal office - alleges the manufacturer and Johnson & Johnson "willfully ignored and tried to quiet the science" around acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder.

This legal action aims to force the companies "remove any commercial messaging" that asserts acetaminophen is reliable for pregnant women.

This legal action echoes the complaints of a assembly of guardians of minors with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD who sued the producers of Tylenol in 2022.

A federal judge threw out the legal action, declaring investigations from the plaintiffs' authorities was lacking definitive proof.
