Game Coverage
21st Minute: Intense Play while Each Side Battle
21st minute: The Broncos push forward to halfway and almost pierce the defensive line via Reece Walsh and Gehamat Shibasaki on the left side. A further superb kick from Reynolds on the final play maintains the Broncos' pressure. For three tackles they remain on the front foot, but a couple of offloads release the speedy Jahrome Hughes, and as he's tackled on the defensive 40m line, a set restart is awarded for holding the player. Melbourne are now in rhythm, and Warbrick breaks through the line, followed by Coates making a dash – only for Reece Walsh to make high contact with a shoulder! Could that be a yellow card? No, says Grant Atkins, because the winger was buckling. Walsh is under review nonetheless, and the Storm resume their attack.
19 mins: Munster Leads Melbourne Attack
19 mins: Cameron Munster is active as Melbourne charge at speed down to their attacking 30m line. On the right side, Hughes kicks high, Katoa rushes up, but in the marking contest, the second-rower knocks on, and the Broncos finally get a respite.
18th Minute: Melbourne Exert Pressure on Brisbane
18th minute: Melbourne perform a textbook set from the kickoff and put significant force on Mariner with the final kick. Once more, the Broncos fail to reach near halfway in response, and Reynolds is compelled to boot it deep to keep his team in touch.
17 mins: Setback for Storm
17th minute: There's a setback for the Storm. Howarth has been subbed out due to a groin issue. Wishart is entering in his place.
CONVERTED TRY! Storm 12-6 Broncos (Katoa, 15)
Spectacular, absolutely stunning. Following consecutive set restarts, the Broncos are flagging. From tackle three close to the line on the left, Melbourne move the ball inside for two passes before Jahrome Hughes drops the ball onto his toe and the charging Eliesa Katoa times his charge to perfection to pounce on the loose ball and stand to celebrate his team’s second try!
From just to the right of the uprights, Nick Meaney converts his second conversion.
12th Minute: Melbourne Show Thrilling Offense
12th minute: Melbourne appear dynamic in attack. There’s speed from the play-the-ball, grunt from the pack, and sharp passing from the backs. A threatening move ends with a kick high to the left side that is dropped by Walsh and results in a infringement to the Storm for an escort on Xavier Coates. The Storm reject the penalty goal and get to work under the posts. They get a set restart – and a further one – as Cameron Munster dances left and right.
10th Minute: Tense Action
10th minute: Stefano Utoikamanu has lived up to his word from the start and his carry from the kickoff allows first Grant, then Ryan Papenhuyzen, to dart from acting half. Hughes boots from 40m and Walsh catches the high kick on his 10m line. Brisbane carry less penetration in this set and get fortunate on the final play when Hunt’s pass to Reynolds is dropped. Fortunately, the veteran halfback delivers a great kick to turn Coates around and makes the Melbourne wing to run from his try line. The Brisbane are overzealous with their chase, catching the Queenslander high, and Storm can gain attacking field position.
CONVERTED TRY! Melbourne 6-6 Broncos (Nick Meaney, 8)
From the scrum, Utoikamanu powers forward to the 20m line. Next, from fast play off the back, all of Melbourne’s big names get a touch as they move it out to the right hand side until Nick Meaney straightens up, runs at an angle at serious pace, and carves through a weak defensive line to score for an instant reply!
Meaney recovers to kick the goal. It's a tied game!
7 mins: Both Sides Trade Sets
7 mins: Both sides exchange conservative sets around midfield, but then the Broncos look to expand on their left, only to fail to find Gehamat Shibasaki with the pass. William Warbrick rushes up and forces a dropped ball for his troubles.
5th Minute: Dream Start for Brisbane
5th minute: This marks the absolute dream start for Brisbane, scoring first before the Storm have even touched the ball, in an attack led by both Haas and Reece Walsh. The Storm might feel a little aggrieved at the referee blowing such an quick infringement, but they were clearly breached by the rapid Brisbane offense.
CONVERTED TRY! Storm 0-6 Brisbane (Deine Mariner, 3)
After kicking downfield, the Broncos begin their attack. Storm concede a six-again for offside, and quickly the ball is in the danger area. Reece Walsh positions himself? Waiting on the right edge, drawing in Howarth, holding his position, then somehow offloading to Deine Mariner on his outside. The winger cuts infield, crosses the try line, then just, only just remains in the field of play as he runs around to score beneath the goalposts.
A review occurs before Reynolds dabs over the goal, but the video official upholds the on-field decision. The venue is erupting to the sound of ecstatic fans.
2 mins: Early Penalty
2 mins: Corey Jensen, not Haas, takes the first hit-up of the night and the Storm are up sharply… but just three tackles later the Melbourne give away the first penalty of the game for Grant impeding Haas on the floor. The Broncos right away in offensive mode.
