Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Music Legend and Cultural Figure, Dies at Eighty-One Years Old
Global audiences mourns the passing of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican-born reggae singer and actor whose captivating voice played a key role in popularizing the reggae genre worldwide. The artist passed away at the age of eighty-one.
“It’s with profound sadness that I announce that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” wrote his spouse Latifa on Instagram. “I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who walked with him on his journey. To all his supporters globally, please know that your encouragement was his strength during his entire professional life … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” The message was also signed by their offspring, Lilty and Aken.
Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hit songs including You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His upbeat musical style and positive spirit brought him a vast and loyal following.
In addition to his musical accomplishments, Cliff starred in the 1972 drama film The Harder They Come, a performance that was highly acclaimed and is considered a landmark of film in Jamaica.
Jimmy Cliff is among the select few of artists, including the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be awarded the esteemed Order of Merit from Jamaica.
