Explosion Takes Three Law Enforcement Officers During Eviction Action in the Verona Area
Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 people sustained injuries in a seemingly deliberate blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.
How It Happened
The explosion took place as officers and emergency crews approached the residence near the Verona region to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.
All three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri military police.
Investigation Developments
A man and a woman were taken into custody at the site and a third person who escaped subsequent to the incident was found not long after. All three have been taken to medical facility.
The detonation could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and images from the scene displayed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.
“This is a time for grieving,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to evict the three family members in the earlier times.
Financial Context
The leader of the Veneto region, the regional head, explained the farmhouse was under an court order due to debts accumulated by the three owners.
Mediators had been assigned to speak to the family members who had locked themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the residents set off the detonation.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed the media.
A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast immediately struck our officers,” he explained.
Molotov cocktails were also located at the property, the minister confirmed.
Injuries and Destruction
Those injured by the blast comprised 11 other members of the police force as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had no electricity.
The official thought the detonation had occurred on a story above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the explosion, he revealed personnel had “heard a whistle, probably the propane tanks being opened”.
Neighbor Statements
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents stated to local news, mentioning that the three had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto joined other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had died in the line of duty.
