England's Assistant Coach Reveals The Philosophy: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.
Ten years back, Barry was playing in League Two. Currently, he's dedicated supporting the head coach win the World Cup in 2026. His journey from player to coach commenced with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He realized his purpose.
Rapid Rise
Barry's progression has been remarkable. Starting in a senior role at Wigan, he built a reputation for innovative drills and great man-management. His roles at clubs led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, plus he took on international positions with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include legends including world-class talents. Today, as part of Team England, it’s full-time, the “pinnacle” according to him.
“Everything starts with a dream … However, I hold that passion overcomes challenges. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, each day, each phase?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We have to build a methodical process that allows us to have the best chance.”
Focus on Minutiae
Passion, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours day and night, he and Tuchel test boundaries. The approach feature player analysis, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and fostering teamwork. Barry emphasizes the England collective and rejects terms such as "break".
“It's not time off or a break,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”
Ambitious Trainers
Barry describes himself and the head coach as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” he declares. “We strive to own the entire field and we dedicate many of our days on. We must not just to keep up of the trends but to beat them and create our own ones. It's an ongoing effort to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to simplify complexity.
“We have 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We need to execute a complex game that offers a strategic upper hand and explain it thoroughly in our 50 days with them. We need to progress from concept to details to understanding to action.
“To build a methodology for effective use in the 50 days, we must utilize the entire 500 days we'll have since we took the job. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships with them. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”
Final Qualifiers
Barry is preparing for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. The team has secured a spot in the tournament with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; instead. This period to build on the team's style, to gain more impetus.
“We are both certain that our playing approach must reflect everything that is good from the top division,” Barry says. “The fitness, the adaptability, the robustness, the integrity. The national team shirt should be harder than ever to get but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape instead of heavy armour.
“To make it light, it's crucial to offer an approach that enables them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and encourages attacking play. They should overthink less and focus more on action.
“You can gain psychological edges you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch – starting moves deep, closing down early. But in the middle area in that part of the ground, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. Everybody has so much information currently. They can organize – defensive shapes. Our aim is to increase tempo through midfield.”
Passion for Progress
His desire for development is relentless. When he studied for the top coaching badge, he was worried over the speaking requirement, as his cohort contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he went into tough situations available to him to hone his presentations. Such as Walton jail in his home city of Liverpool, where he also took inmates during an exercise.
Barry graduated as the best in his year, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard included convinced and he recruited the coach on to his staff with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it spoke volumes that the team dismissed virtually all of his coaches but not Barry.
His replacement at Chelsea took over, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry stayed on under Graham Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced in Germany, he brought Barry over of Chelsea and back alongside him. English football's governing body consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
