A high-ranking administration official has unintentionally leaked details regarding proposals to dispatch an specialized army unit to Portland, marking the most recent in a string of intelligence leaks attributed to the present government.

Encrypted Communications Expose Deployment Discussions

Anthony Salisbury, a senior aide to prominent administration strategist Stephen Miller, was seen using the encrypted messaging app in a public place to discuss a proposal to deploy the military's elite parachute unit to Portland, the Democratic-run Oregon city which has been frequently criticized by the president as described as “war-ravaged.”

Images of Salisbury’s Signal messages were obtained by a publication, which reported they were transmitted while the staffer was “in plain sight of others” in Minnesota.

“Between you and I, I think the defense secretary just wants the political protection from the president if anything goes wrong with the troops there,” one message stated.

Defense Secretary Wants Executive Approval

In the messages, sent last weekend, Salisbury corresponded with Patrick Weaver, a top consultant to the Pentagon chief, Pete Hegseth, and additional high-ranking federal officials.

Weaver wrote that Hegseth desired the president to explicitly order him to send military personnel to Portland.

He added that Hegseth would prefer to send in the national guard due to potential public reaction over using the regular military.

“82nd is like our top tier rapid response unit for overseas. So it will generate a lot of headlines,” he added. “Probably why he wants the president to order him to do it.”

Elite Unit History

The 82nd airborne division is a specialized military unit which focuses in airborne operations and forcible entry operations. It was utilized in World War I and II and the conflicts in Southeast Asia and Afghanistan. Its commander was the final U.S. troop to withdraw from Afghanistan in 2021.

Latest Deployment Claims

On the weekend, Hegseth announced 200 members of the state militia would be sent “right away.” On Wednesday, the president claimed the national guard was “now in place”; but, a local news affiliate reported that the guard had not yet been deployed.

Administration Response

In a statement to the news outlet, a White House representative verified Salisbury had been in Minnesota to be present at a memorial service.

“Despite experiencing sorrow from the loss of a family member, Tony persisted with his important work on behalf of the public,” the representative stated. “Nothing in these private conversations, that are regrettably being reported on by morally bankrupt reporters, is new or confidential information.”

Prior Administration Disclosures

The communications constitute the latest awkward leak associated with the government. In spring, the top editor of a major publication was accidentally added to a encrypted group that was being utilized by high-level administration figures, such as Hegseth and the second-in-command, to talk about highly sensitive armed attacks on a Middle Eastern nation.

A later it emerged that Hegseth had employed a second Signal group chat to send specific details about the strikes to his wife, his sibling and about a dozen additional people.
