At least 64 people died in a police operation cracking down on the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's records.

Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the AlemĂŁo and Penha districts, local authorities stated. More than 80 suspects were taken into custody.

Fierce clashes commenced when about 2,500 police forces entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Red Command countered with gunfire, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, authorities confirmed.

The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "horrified" by the police operation, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".

The area of favelas adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the headquarters of a major organised crime groups.

State officials confirmed no less than 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
